AMA submission to the ACCC on private health insurance anti-competitive practices

The AMA remains concerned that because of a lack of transparency around private health insurance and certain practices by industry, most patients do not understand their health insurance product and are increasingly missing out on necessary treatment when they need it. This submission argues that poor communication of changes to private health insurance policies held by consumers is symptomatic of a system designed to confuse customers to the advantage of the insurers. It is, unfortunately, usually only at the time when people need to have medical treatment in a hospital that they first understand that their insurance policy is deficient.
