How to volunteer or apply for positions during COVID-19?
Keen to register your interest in volunteering to help manage the impacts of COVID-19? There are a couple of avenues in Queensland.
RETIRED OR SEMI-RETIRED DOCTORS
- Contact AMA Queensland on (07) 3872 2222 or email covid-19@amaq.com.au. Your email will be sent to a dedicated Queensland Health Team, who will contact you directly to advise how and where you can be of assistance, depending on your location in Queensland.

By providing your personal details and work history, this affords Queensland Health the opportunity to create an individual profile which will be shared with the relevant areas managing the resourcing and they will be able to contact the doctors directly should there be opportunities that match their skill set and experience over the coming months.
Working remotely:
The Australian Senior Active Doctors Association (ASADA) sought information from Queensland Health on the ability to work remotely (i.e. from home) for contact tracing and telehealth and received the following reply:
Privacy, security and supervision have all been included as reasoning to perform these roles non-remotely. There are instances where regional sites have discussed having tele based roles being performed out of metro locations, however I believe this would still involve being on-site at a central metro site.
Mt Gravatt central call centre:
Queensland Health has also confirmed to ASADA that the Mt Gravatt central call centre is acting on recommended precautions related to Covid-19 and social distancing. This includes greater than 1.5m spacing between workstations, added cleaning and sanitation and additional measures such as doors being fitted with foot operated opening (for example, on the toilet doors). They have also opened all peripheral doors to the centre to increase air-flow. Regarding volumes, at the busiest time of day the Mt Gravatt central call centre can have about 70 people present and that the work area is open plan.
MEDICAL STUDENTS
The Department of Health is collaborating with the Deans of Queensland Medical Schools on determining the most appropriate model to continue to support the clinical placement needs of Queensland’s medical students and to work through an agreeable model whereby students may contribute to the COVID-19 response. The placement of Medical Students will be managed by their respective medical school.
