Recruitment for private practice

If you are an owner of a GP practice or are thinking about starting your own private practice, an ability to recruit well is crucial to ensuring you are selecting the right people for your practice and filling any skills gaps. Currently, recruitment is not one of the easiest things to do given the scarcity of GPs in Australia. On top of this, practices are also having to follow the current COVID-19 restrictions around vaccinations which may eliminate quality candidates.

If you are looking to recruit new front of house staff, decide if you need to hire externally, or if you can train an employee up into that position. Determining this will save time and money on recruitment. This will also allow for career progression, which is a common desire for many employees and potential job candidates.

Start with the role's position description. What are the essential skills and desired qualifications? To understand the type of employee you are looking for, get your existing staff to write down their daily duties. This method is also effective when you are hiring to fill a position or require someone on a temporary basis. Even if you have a broad idea of what the role is, to hire accordingly, you need to understand every aspect of the job. Having this understanding will also help with classifying your staff under the relevant awards to determine an appropriate rate of pay.

The Workplace Relations Team held a webinar last month about the recruitment and selection process, where we provided members with important information and tips on the key elements to consider in recruitment. Our webinar highlighted the legal requirements employers should be aware of and pieces of legislation that must be followed. If you are currently hiring or are looking to learn more about the process, you can purchase the recording here. Once you have completed this form, simply email it back to the Workplace Relations Team at workplacerelations@amaq.com.au and we will provide you with the recording.
