Vaccines mandatory for all health care workers

The Queensland Government has mandated COVID-19 vaccinations for all private health care workers following months of advocacy by AMA Queensland.

“We have been calling on the Government for months to make it mandatory for all health care workers – in GPs’ offices, in other private specialist offices, in dental surgeries – to be vaccinated,” AMA Queensland President Professor Chris Perry said.

“We acknowledge there are some medical reasons for an adult not to be vaccinated – for example, someone who has had an organ transplant and is on anti-rejection drugs. These people need to be protected from infection because they will become very sick and may even die if they get COVID.

“There’s also no vaccine yet for children under 11 years old.

“It’s complex for small employers like GPs to meet the legalities required to mandate vaccinations for their employees, and we are pleased that the State Government has heeded our calls and is now showing leadership in this area.”
