Policy priorities

The AMA Queensland policy team continues to represent members across health issues that impact the medical profession in Queensland. The team regularly seeks feedback from members to prepare submissions and responses to health guidelines, government policy, legislation and more.

Feedback is currently sought from Obstetricians and Gynaecologists on the Obesity in Pregnancy (including bariatric surgery) Clinical Guidelines. Obesity is increasing worldwide and is the leading risk factor associated with disease in Australia. Pregnant women experiencing obesity and high gestational weight gain, are at greater risk of complications and negative health impacts for themselves and their babies. Positive lifestyle interventions across the childbearing continuum provide an opportunity for better health outcomes and renewed efforts are recommended to encourage all women of reproductive age to adopt healthy lifestyle choices. Have your say on these new guidelines that set a framework for a multifaceted and holistic approach to clinical care. Send your feedback to our Policy Officer Nadine Matti n.matti@amaq.com.au by COB Monday 8 March 2021.

Thank you to all members who recently provided feedback on the Antenatal Corticosteroids Clinical Guidelines and we will continue to update members on the progress of this document.

The policy team are also working on a number of other significant issues including:
•    a pre-budget submission for the Queensland Government that will lobby for funding in priority areas;
•    task substitution;
•    GP shortages in regional communities;
•    residential aged care; and
•    environmental sustainability.

Please contact our policy team via policy@amaq.com.au or phone (07) 3872 2222 if you want to contribute your perspective on these significant issues.
