AMA advocacy win - Elective surgery restrictions eased

 

The AMA and the peak surgical bodies for the last two weeks have been in negotiation with all governments around the country about how best to restore regular planned patient care in a safe and sustainable manner. A gradual and phased approach to restore surgery has been agreed, in consultation with doctors informed by patient needs.

The first phase of the reintroduction will occur on 27 April.

In gradually restarting elective surgery, we must monitor progress. Precautions to prevent virus spread must be followed, and we need to be ready to respond to any challenges that occur.

PPE - We must also ensure sufficient and sustainable use of Personal Protective Equipment. There must be enough PPE to meet need, and efforts to secure more supply in recent days are benefiting patient and clinician safety alike.
