GP Leadership Excellence Program
Dr Maria Boulton and other AMA Queensland members, including Drs Fiona Raciti and Aaron Chambers, contemplated leadership and healthcare challenges at a two-day forum.
AMA Queensland President Dr Maria Boulton attended the GPpartners Practice Leadership Excellence Program in August, a collaboration between the University of Queensland Business School and GPpartners, which represents GPs in north Brisbane.
The vision for the program is to empower medical experts to lead with confidence and influence in shaping the future of primary healthcare for Queensland.
Speakers included Dr Mark O’Brien and Associate Professor Neil Paulsen, covering topics from the personal transformative journey for GPs, leading effective teams, and leading in complex, adaptive systems.
Attendees heard how the transformation to leadership journey requires courage, vision and determination, as leaders operate in greater levels of personal uncertainty than most technical experts.
They discussed the pros and cons of different models of healthcare funding, the global competition for healthcare workers, and the continuing impact of COVID on increased baseline operating costs, greater burnout in the workforce, and reduction in staff attendance reliability.
COVID has also accelerated the pace at which Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being used for research, diagnosis and treatment, and patient-guided care, with AI one of several healthcare megatrends discussed over two days.
