Operation Donation launched

The AMA Queensland Foundation has launched Operation Donation, a fundraising campaign encouraging doctors to donate the value of their most common operation, procedure or service to help the Foundation continue its life-changing work.

AMA Queensland Foundation Chair Dr Dilip Dhupelia announced Operation Donation during the Dinner for the Profession on Friday, 20 August.

“The Foundation as you know is our Foundation. It’s our charity,” Dr Dhupelia told 100 AMA Queensland members.

“We continue to direct funds to very needy causes by identifying gaps in the health system and helping where it is most needed.”

The AMA Queensland Foundation was established by doctors to relieve sickness, suffering and disability among Queenslanders in need – particularly those patients in rural and remote locations who face logistical challenges in accessing timely treatment.

It has provided support for organisations as diverse as the Hear and Say Foundation, the MND and Me Foundation, community groups mentoring indigenous children, and assistance for victims of flooding in Far North Queensland.

It has worked effectively with Queensland Health to implement positive initiatives for the community through securing funding for the Hep C Kombi Clinic team, which visits locations such as drug rehabilitation services and rough sleeping sites with testing equipment and medicines.

Its medical student scholarship program has provided more than $455,000 to Queensland medical students experiencing financial hardship, allowing them to continue their studies and become doctors.

The Foundation is currently in discussions with Beddown, an organisation that turns spaces that are commonly busy during the day but empty by night, like car parks, into pop-up accommodation for the homeless.

“We are incredibly proud of our projects – they have been life-changing for the patients involved,” Dr Dhupelia said.

“And we couldn’t have done it without the financial support of our generous donors and corporate partners. Receiving no government funding, we rely on your support to make our work possible.”

Donations are tax deductible and can be made here.
