National ban on engineered stone will protect lives
AMA Queensland commends the State Government for leading the way on protecting workers exposed to silica dust from engineered stone, resulting in a national ban on the dangerous product.
Australia's workplace ministers unanimously agreed to implement a national ban on engineered stone after Safe Work Australia published a report on the dangers of silica dust.
“We are relieved that the government has acted so quickly with the health and safety of workers in mind,” AMA Queensland President Dr Maria Boulton said.
“It is a tragedy that people have suffered silica-related disease or lost their lives simply from doing their jobs, and we recognise the workers who have spoken up to fight for their rights.
“No day at work should consist of the potential exposure to such a dangerous product that can cause avoidable and irreversible respiratory conditions.
“No doctor wants to have to treat someone suffering from a preventable disease or illness, especially one acquired in the workplace.
“It is ultimately up to governments to decide how to regulate employment, including setting standards for protective equipment or banning substances that are deemed too risky and dangerous.
“We welcome all measures to prevent future patients suffering from silicosis and related diseases screening those with a history of exposure to silica dust from engineered stone and support for those diagnosed with silicosis or related lung diseases.”
