Australia Day Honours for AMA Queensland members

Four AMA Queensland members have been recognised in this year’s Australia Day Honours for their outstanding service to medicine and the community.

Prof Robin Cook was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) and Drs Matthew Young, Christine McConnell and David Stabler were all awarded Medals of the Order of Australia (OAM).

“Our doctors work tirelessly to protect and ensure the health of all Queensland communities, and it is wonderful to see our members receive the accolades they deserve,” AMA Queensland President Dr Maria Boulton said.

“GP, co-founder of Inala Kombi Clinic, and regular Doctor Q contributor Dr Matt Young has been recognised for his extraordinary dedication to the profession and community. Dr Young’s work has made tangible, positive health impacts to vulnerable members of our community, and we feel privileged he has chosen to be part of the AMA.

“After a career dedicated to serving remote and regional communities, Dr Christine McConnell was recognised for her work as an Antarctic Medical Officer and with the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Accessing quality medicine in remote communities can be extremely challenging, and Dr McConnell has made an outstanding contribution to change this.

“Dr David Stabler is being honoured for his service to orthopaedic surgery. Currently an upper limb surgeon and orthopaedic surgery specialist at the Gold Coast Hospital, his advocacy efforts are admirable and extend beyond his day-to-day work to his nearly 30-year involvement in leadership and administration bodies.

“Prof Robert Robin Cooke OAM has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to pathology, and to professional organisations.

“We would also like to congratulate Institute of Urban Indigenous Health (IUIH) CEO Adrian Carson on being made a Member of the Order (AM) for his significant service to Indigenous health.

“First Nations communities continue to disproportionately experience the burden of disease and Adrian is at the forefront of change, advocating and supporting Aboriginal and Islander communities in every role he has undertaken.

“We are incredibly proud of all our members and their tireless work to strengthen the standard of health in our Queensland communities.

“It is an exceptional honour to work and advocate on behalf of such dedicated health professionals, and we thank all our members who continue to strive for better community health and standards for our health workforce.”
