DHS: Streamlined PBS authority reminder

As part of its efforts to reduce call wait times, the Department of Human Services (DHS) has asked the AMA to remind GPs that it is not necessary to call the PBS Authority phone line for streamlined authority medicines.

Around 4.7 per cent of calls per month to the PBS Authority phone line are for streamlined authority medicines that don’t require a phone call. If prescribers see ‘Authority Required (Streamlined)’ marked against a medicine in the PBS, they can click on it to find the four digit code for the relevant clinical indication and include it on the prescription.

The DHS will continue to communicate the benefits of using the streamlined authority numbers to providers through the DHS News for Health Professionals webpage.
