AMA supports police ministers agreement to toughen gun laws

AMA President, Dr Kerryn Phelps, said today the AMA strongly supports yesterday's agreement by Commonwealth, State and Territory Police Ministers to strengthen Australia's gun laws, especially for handguns.

The AMA has been calling for a ban on semi-automatic handguns for some time.

Dr Phelps said doctors and other health professionals who care for the victims of gun incidents and accidents will welcome the action by the Police Ministers.

"The proposals but forward yesterday are sensible, if belated, and we now look forward to legislation being quickly introduced to further tighten controls on guns," Dr Phelps said.

"Bickering over who funds the buyback scheme must not be allowed to delay the introduction of the tougher gun laws.

"A cooperative national approach to gun control is needed to ensure greater safety and security in Australian communities," Dr Phelps said.
