Wrong to discourage pregnant women from exercise - AMA

Vice-President of the Federal AMA, Dr Trevor Mudge, said today that a report warning women against exercise during the first three months of pregnancy is unsubstantiated and contradicts medical science.

Dr Mudge, a senior obstetrician, said the research, by a senior lecturer at the University of New South Wales, was based on the effects of maternal heat stress in guinea pigs, and should not be applied to pregnant women.

"Medical science indicates there is no problem with pregnant women exercising for 30 minutes or more per session at any stage of pregnancy," Dr Mudge said.

"While it is important for women to avoid prolonged overheating during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, the findings of this research have no relevance for pregnant women.

Dr Mudge said recent international studies indicate increased temperature in pregnant women during exercise has not been found to lead to any foetal abnormalities.

"If women are careful and cautious during pregnancy, there is no reason why they should not participate in a wide range of recreational activities.

"In fact, 30 minutes or more exercise a day at a moderate level is of benefit to pregnant women," Dr Mudge said.

The AMA has recently endorsed the guidelines by the Australian Sports Commission, Pregnancy in Sport, Guidelines for the Australian Sporting Industry.

Some of these benefits may include:

    • a reduced risk of developing cardiovascular disease;
    • better general health;
    • a reduced risk of developing some forms of cancer;
    • a reduced risk of acquiring type 2 and gestational diabetes;
    • a reduced risk of developing osteoporosis;
    • a reduced risk of obesity and unhealthy weight gain;

Dr Mudge said the benefits of women staying active during pregnancy are well documented, and women should make themselves aware of the facts about pregnancy in consultation with their general practitioner.
