Tobacco excise legislation passed; plain packaging for tobacco products next - AMA
Welcoming the passing today of legislation to increase the excise on tobacco products by 25 per cent, the AMA is urging the Parliament to be equally supportive of other anti-smoking initiatives, especially the introduction of plain packaging for tobacco products.
AMA President, Dr Andrew Pesce, said the Government’s strong action to combat smoking would save lives and improve the health of many thousands of Australians.
“Making cigarettes more expensive is a strong deterrent for smokers and potential smokers,” Dr Pesce said.
“Making the packaging less attractive is another.
“Introducing plain packaging for tobacco products will make Australia a world leader in tobacco control.
“More importantly, it will make it harder for dangerous tobacco products to be advertised or promoted in an appealing way, especially to teenagers and young Australians.
“All aspects of the Government’s tobacco control legislation – including the funding for anti-smoking campaigns and Quitline services – must be supported by all politicians,” Dr Pesce said.
