Time for facts not fear in pregnant netballer debate

The AMA has welcomed Netball Australia's decision to review its ban on pregnant players in netball competitions.

AMA Vice-President, Dr Trevor Mudge, a senior obstetrician, said today that he hopes common sense will prevail and that the ban on pregnant players will be lifted permanently.

"This whole unfortunate episode came about because of an irrational fear of litigation," Dr Mudge said.

"It is time for the facts, not fear, to dominate the pregnancy and sport debate.

"Medical science indicates there is no problem with pregnant women playing sports like netball up to a certain stage of their pregnancy.

"The physical and social benefits of organised sport should remain available and accessible for pregnant women.

"Sport should be about fun and fitness, not lawyers and litigation," Dr Mudge said.
