Structured Settlements Legislation - Another piece of the medical indemnity jigsaw in place

Dr Phelps said structured settlements would contribute to containing expected further increases in doctors' medical indemnity insurance premiums.

"It is time now to get all the other necessary reforms happening," Dr Phelps said.

"The structured settlements legislation is an important milestone but will not be effective in stabilising and containing premiums without consistent national tort law reform particularly.

"As we approach the holiday season, medical indemnity remains a serious threat to doctors and patients alike.

"It is important that all governments put medical indemnity and tort law reform on their New Year priority list.

"The structured settlements legislation is a good start," Dr Phelps said.

Dr Phelps paid tribute to the efforts of Assistant Treasurer, Senator Coonan, and her predecessor in the portfolio, Senator Rod Kemp, in getting this legislation drafted and presented to the Parliament.

The initial impetus had come from the Prime Minister who expressed a personal interest in the issue following a meeting and briefing from the AMA last year.
