PBAC's Independence Must Be Protected - AMA

The Federal President of the AMA, Dr Kerryn Phelps, said today that Health Minister, Michael Wooldridge, must ensure that the integrity, independence and international reputation of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) is protected.

Dr Phelps was responding to newspaper reports today that the Government is planning to appoint industry lobbyist, Mr Pat Clear, to PBAC.

"I am concerned by reports that Mr Clear has already been appointed, with only the public announcement to be made," Dr Phelps said.

"Of greater concern is the possibility that other PBAC members may resign if Mr Clear's appointment is confirmed.

"The Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) and PBAC are above politics and, as such, should not be tainted by any conflict of interest, real or perceived.

"PBAC and the PBS exist for the benefit of people who need affordable access to prescription drugs, not for the benefit of the drug companies.

"I call on Dr Wooldridge to put the interests of the people who rely on the PBS first. He should clear the air today by announcing publicly that Mr Clear will not be appointed to PBAC," Dr Phelps said.
