National agenda for early childhood

The AMA today welcomed the announcement by Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Larry Anthony, that the Government will develop a National Agenda for Early Childhood, which will cover issues of child health.

Chair of the AMA's Advisory Committee on Child and Youth Health, Dr Michael Rice, said the AMA looks forward to seeing more detail of funding and programs under the National Agenda.

"A whole of Government approach is warranted to ensure safe, healthy and rewarding futures for our children," Dr Rice said.

"There is evidence of links between health and education outcomes for children, for instance, especially in indigenous communities, so a coordinated Government approach makes sense.

"The AMA Advisory Committee on Child and Youth Health will seek a meeting with the Minister at the earliest opportunity to discuss the Government's plans to improve and maintain the health of our children," Dr Rice said.
