MJA appoints new editor

The Medical Journal of Australia (MJA) has appointed Dr Annette Katelaris as its new Editor, taking over from Dr Martin Van Der Weyden, who has been Editor since 1995.

Dr Katelaris is a practising general practitioner with a strong record in medical publishing, including as Medical Editor for Australian Doctor magazine and the 6 minutes medical newsletter.  She has also been involved for many years in developing and editing medical educational material for doctors.

As well as her medical degree, Dr Katelaris has completed a Master of Public Health from Sydney University and is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.

In making the appointment, the Board of the Australasian Medical Publishing Company (AMPCo), which publishes the MJA, noted that Dr Katelaris has proven business and management credentials and is keen to apply new media approaches and publishing innovation to build on the journal’s reputation and take it to a broader audience.

Dr Katelaris will commence in the role from 31 January 2011.

The AMA and the AMPCo Board acknowledge the enormous contribution that Dr Van Der Weyden has made to the MJA and to the health policy conversation in Australia and overseas.

He brought high quality medical research to the attention of medical practitioners all around the globe.  His thought provoking and sometimes challenging commentaries and editorials were catalysts for intelligent debate on clinical and public health issues locally and internationally.

Dr Van Der Weyden has accepted the title of Emeritus Editor, and will stay with the MJA for a transition period as mentor to Dr Katelaris.

The MJA is the journal of the Australian Medical Association.
