LOOK AFTER YOUR HEALTH – SEE YOUR FAMILY DOCTOR

AMA FAMILY DOCTOR WEEK, 19-25 July 2015

You and Your Family Doctor: the best partnership in health

The AMA is encouraging all Australians to see their local doctor for a health check as part of Family Doctor Week 2015.

AMA Family Doctor Week is a celebration of the central role played by local GPs in delivering high quality primary health care across Australia.

The theme of Family Doctor Week, 19 – 25 July 2015, is ‘You and Your Family Doctor: the best partnership in health’.

AMA President, Professor Brian Owler, said today that Family Doctor Week is a chance for the medical profession to remind people about the importance of looking after their health.

“If you have a family doctor, make sure you have regular check-ups,” Professor Owler said.

“If you don’t have a family doctor, we urge you to find one locally and establish a relationship that will be crucial to your good health throughout your life.

“Nearly 90 per cent of Australians have a regular GP, and enjoy better health because of that ongoing, trusted relationship.

“The personalised care and preventive health advice provided by GPs about exercise, diet, and leading a healthy lifestyle keep people out of hospitals and keep our health costs down.

“Family doctors are leaders in preventive health care, early diagnosis and treatment, coordinated care, and chronic disease management.”

As part of AMA Family Doctor Week 2015, Professor Owler will deliver a televised address at the National Press Club on Wednesday, 22 July.

Each day this week, the AMA will highlight issues affecting family doctors and urging the Government to improve support to enable GPs to continue to serve their communities.

As part of Family Doctor Week 2015, the AMA has produced a number of videos highlighting the important contribution family doctors make to the health of the nation, including:

·         General Practice: More a Passion than a Job

·         Prevention and Care throughout Life

·         Plan for Pharmacists in General Practice
