A healthy UMP crucial to medical indemnity stability - AMA

AMA President, Dr Bill Glasson, said today that it was important that United Medical Protection (UMP) emerge from provisional liquidation as a viable going concern to preserve stability in the medical indemnity environment.

UMP's application to be released from Provisional Liquidation is set to be heard in the NSW Supreme Court tomorrow.

Dr Glasson said that medical indemnity in Australia is in a fragile state and it was important that one of the biggest insurers in the market continues operating to maintain confidence in the system while the Government's review is proceeding.

"UMP insures the majority of NSW and Queensland doctors, and around 40 per cent nationally," Dr Glasson said.

"The AMA acknowledges the efforts of the provisional liquidator, Mr David Lombe, UMP and the Federal Government in returning UMP to a viable financial position.

"We support the Board recommendations proposed by Mr Lombe.

"Having UMP operational again will provide confidence to doctors, patients, other Medical Defence Organisations and governments at this difficult time," Dr Glasson said.
