Government's IVF Bill Is Ill-Conceived

President of the AMA, Dr Kerryn Phelps, today supported Democrats Leader, Meg Lees, in calling for Coalition women to vote against the Government's IVF Bill.

Dr Phelps said the Government's Bill is ill-conceived.

"Access to reproductive technology involves complex ethical and moral ramifications that should not be debated from a platform of discrimination against some groups in the community," Dr Phelps said.

"The AMA supports the protection of equal rights for women who want access to reproductive technology.

"As taxpayers, they are entitled to equal treatment. As women, they are entitled to equal treatment.

"And, as a modern society, Australia should not be tampering with the fundamental principles of the Sex Discrimination Act.

"The Act was a hard-fought victory for Australian women, and it was supported - and is still supported - by the Australian community as a whole.

"It is not up for grabs," Dr Phelps said.

The Vice President of the AMA, Dr Trevor Mudge - an obstetrician and fertility specialist - said there should be no discrimination when it comes to access to reproductive technology.

"For single women, reproductive technology is a much safer method of conceiving than the alternatives of do-it-yourself artificial insemination or sexual intercourse outside a relationship," Dr Mudge said.
