Government must get 'fair dinkum' about protecting the PBS

AMA President, Dr Bill Glasson, said today the Government must categorically rule out offering any Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) concessions as part of a free trade deal with the United States.

The Australian reports today that the US is seeking to press for a broader range of approved uses of PBS medicines.  Such a move would benefit US drug companies at Australian taxpayers' expense.

Dr Glasson said the Government must not allow the interests of US drug companies to take precedence over the health of Australians.

"The Government has to get fair dinkum about defending the PBS in the trade talks with the US," Dr Glasson said.

"Our PBS ensures the best possible health outcomes for all Australians.

"For over half a century, the PBS has kept Australians among the healthiest people in the world.

"Research shows that affordable access to PBS medicines saves lives and improves the quality of many lives.

"It keeps people out of hospital and frees up resources in other areas of the health system.

"Our investment in the PBS pays huge dividends in terms of a healthier Australia, and must be protected.

"The health of Australians is not a tradable commodity," Dr Glasson said.
