Former AMA President honoured on Queen's Birthday
AMA President, Dr Steve Hambleton, today paid tribute to former President, Professor Kerryn Phelps AM, who yesterday was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
Professor Phelps, who served as Federal AMA President from 2000-2003, was the first woman elected to the position.
Dr Hambleton said that Professor Phelps was a hardworking high-profile President who got results and steered the AMA in new directions.
“Kerryn raised the issue of unaffordable medical indemnity for doctors to a major political crisis that made the major parties sit up and take notice, and she maintained the AMA as a key commentator in areas such as climate change and health, Indigenous health, and community public health,” Dr Hambleton said.
“As a social justice campaigner and a person prepared to take risks to promote a worthy cause, she is a very deserving recipient of this honour.”
Dr Hambleton said the medical profession featured prominently in the Honours, with surgeons and researchers, advocates and administrators, along with loyal community family doctors, being recognised for their outstanding work.
“The AMA congratulates all members of the medical profession who have been honoured for their great service to the profession and to their communities,” Dr Hambleton said.
Dr Hambleton made special mention of former AMA Federal Councillor, Associate Professor James MacDougall ‘Mac’ Wyllie, a surgeon and AMA stalwart, who has served the Mt Druitt community in Sydney for many years; and Victorian GP and medical administrator, Dr Joanna Flynn, who is currently Chair of the National Medical Board of Australia. Dr Flynn was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) and A/Prof Wyllie was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).
