Dr Trevor Mudge, AMA Vice President, with Radio ABC Triple J

COMPERE: The Australian Medical Association says politicians should put aside any ethical concerns about stem cell research. The proposal to use excess IVF embryos for stem cell research will be discussed at next month's meeting between the Prime Minister and State and Territory leaders.

The AMA has welcomed a Labor Party decision giving MPs a conscience vote on the issue.

MUDGE: There is certainly a concern for those who believe that life begins at fertilisation, but those in Australia with chronic illness are very much hoping that they will find themselves able to vote for research which has the capacity to save the lives of millions with diabetes, Alzheimers disease, thyroid disease, and those awaiting transplant. This is a very, very important decision.
