Doctors Urged To Register To Provide Tsunami Medical Aid

Following is the text of an AAP report based on interview with AMA President, Dr Bill Glasson, today.

AAP Report - Thursday 6 January 2005

AMA President, Dr Bill Glasson, comments on doctors offering tsunami aid.

The Australian Medical Association says doctors disappointed after having their offers of tsunami aid work knocked back should register to help restore public health in affected areas in the years to come.

AMA president BILL GLASSON says he can understand that many doctors and nurses are feeling frustrated after being told their time and skills couldn't be used in the immediate aftermath of the disaster.

He says medical professionals would do more good in the long-term by registering with the government and aid agencies and receiving proper training to work in third-world conditions.

Dr GLASSON says ongoing support will need to be given over the next five to 10 years.

He says doctors in Australia also could help by ensuring those returning from tsunami-affected areas received appropriate medical care.

The Tsunami Medical Aid Hotline is 1800 004 599.
