Doctors Confident About Flu Vaccine Supplies

AMA President, Dr Bill Glasson, said today that doctors are confident there will be sufficient flu vaccine available for the coming influenza season following assurances from Chief Medical Officer, Professor John Horvath.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) identified some stocks of vaccine that did not meet Australian standards and replacement stocks have been ordered.

The AMA will be advising its members today to reassure patients that supplies will be met and to make plans for vaccinations in the usual way.

"If people are feeling well, particularly older people, they should not be in a rush to get the vaccine," Dr Glasson said.

"Younger and fitter people who take the vaccine as a precaution should hold off anyway to allow current stocks of the vaccine to go to older and more frail patients."

Dr Glasson congratulated the Chief Medical Officer and the TGA on their swift action.
