AMA welcomes new advertising standards for motor vehicles

Chair of the AMA Public Health Committee, Dr John Davis, said today that the medical profession strongly endorses the new code of practice for car advertising in Australia.

The Advertising Standards Bureau has released tough new advertising standards that will hopefully deter car advertising that glorifies speeding, reckless driving, the use of drugs or alcohol in ads, tired drivers, or motorcyclists not wearing helmets.

Dr Davis said the new code should help promote safer driving.

"It is important that motorists and motorcyclists, especially young people, are not encouraged to drive in a reckless or unsafe manner," Dr Davis said.

"Doctors, nurses, ambulance officers and other health professionals are the ones who deal on a daily basis with the victims of bad driving.

"We tend the wounds of the injured, do our best to save every precious life, and counsel the family, friends and loved ones of the victims of bad driving.

"Any initiative to help reduce the carnage on our roads is welcomed by the medical profession," Dr Davis said.
