AMA thanks Professor Brendan Murphy AC on his service

The AMA congratulates Professor Brendan Murphy AC on his leadership over three years of the Department of Health and Aged Care and wishes him well in his retirement.

AMA President Professor Steve Robson thanked Professor Murphy for his collaborative leadership and all his work undertaken with the Department during a difficult period.

“Professor Brendan Murphy was a steady hand during the pandemic, first as Chief Medical Officer and then as the Secretary of the Department,” he said.

“The AMA welcomed the first medical doctor to run the Department in almost 40 years.

“He was the joint recipient of the AMA President’s Award in 2021 in recognition of his service.”

As Chief Medical Officer, Professor Murphy was instrumental in establishing the National Medical Workforce Strategy and working closely with the AMA on its development. He was well respected across the profession from Doctors in Training to Fellows.

Professor Murphy is a nephrologist by training with a history of leadership and innovation in the medical field.

The Minister for Health, Mark Butler, announced today that Professor Murphy would retire on 6 July 2023.
