AMA Secretary-General to retire: search begins for replacement

AMA President, Dr Bill Glasson, said today that the organisation's Secretary General, Dr Robert Bain, has advised his intention to retire in May 2004 at the end of his five-year contract.

Dr Glasson said the search for Dr Bain's replacement will start this week to ensure continuity of management and direction of the AMA Secretariat at such an important time for health policy and the Australian health system.

Executive recruitment company, First Place International, will begin the search tomorrow with advertisements in major newspapers.

Dr Glasson said Dr Bain has been a strong and decisive chief executive of the AMA during a busy and often difficult period for the medical profession in Australia.

"Dr Bain ensured that the interests of doctors and their patients, and the broader community, were prominent throughout the medical indemnity crisis, the emerging medical workforce shortages, and the ongoing debate about Medicare," Dr Glasson said.

"The AMA has strengthened its position as an influential and respected member organisation and advocate for doctors and patients over the past five years.

"On behalf of the AMA Federal Council, members and staff, I wish Dr Bain all the best in his final months as Secretary General and in his retirement, during which, I am sure, he will not be idle.

"Dr Bain has been a tireless worker for the AMA and his exceptional lobbying skills have ensured the AMA has always had a strong voice in Canberra and in all Federal electorates.

"The important thing now is to find the right person to carry on Dr Bain's good work," Dr Glasson said.

Dr Bain served three AMA Presidents - Dr Glasson, Dr Kerryn Phelps, and Dr David Brand.
