AMA Position Statement on Sexual Diversity and Gender Identity

In a speech to the Amnesty International Global Human Rights Conference in Sydney today, AMA President, Dr Kerryn Phelps, released an AMA Position Statement on sexual diversity and health.

The AMA Position Statement on Sexual Diversity and Gender Identity was formally endorsed by the AMA Federal Council at its meeting in Canberra last weekend.

Dr Phelps said the global Amnesty International Conference was an appropriate forum at which to launch the Statement.

Dr Phelps' speech was titled "Why Homophobia Is A Health Issue".

"Despite strong advocacy and sacrifice and some progress, there is still unacceptable injustice, prejudice, inequalities under the law, and serious health consequences as a result of homophobia," Dr Phelps said.

"Homophobia is clearly about irrational fear and it is without doubt a health issue to be treated seriously. Discrimination means that the health of homosexual people differs from that of the general population.

"Homosexuality itself does not pose some genetic or biological hazard - it is the negative reactions of others to it that creates the problems.

"Poor health outcomes for homosexual people can take many forms such as results of violence and hate crimes, inequitable access to health care, and mental health problems, particularly stress and depression, which lead to higher rates of suicide.

"Doctors have a significant role to play in promoting healthy attitudes to sexual and gender diversity.

"With the release of our position statement today, the AMA is reaffirming our belief in equity of access to health care for all Australians.

"The AMA is supportive of interventions that prevent the development of homophobia, as this will improve the health of all Australians.

"We hope that other groups in the community will match our commitment to change and social justice," Dr Phelps said.

The Position Statement is available on the AMA website.
