AMA: Improved access to after hours medical services welcomed

The AMA supports the government’s policy of improving access to after hours GP services.

AMA President Dr Rosanna Capolingua, said after hours access ensured patients received the care they need, when they need it.

“Timely access to expert care reduces stress levels across the board. It reduces the stress of patients who are ill or in pain, it reduces stress on families concerned for the health of a loved one, and it helps reduce the pressure on our overstretched hospital emergency departments,” Dr Capolingua said.

“After hour access is also clinically important as it provides for the earliest possible medical intervention.”

Dr Capolingua was responding to media reports suggesting access to increased payments for after hours consultations was being abused.

“The AMA will work with government to ensure tax payers dollars are protected along with after hours access for patients.

“The figures show a 30 percent increase in after hours consultations since the item was introduced in 2005.

“People don’t choose when they get sick. Our principal concern is to ensure patients get the help they need when they need it.

“Some patients will also seek to access after hours care for non urgent treatment because of work commitments. The option to go to a doctor on the weekend is often more attractive than taking time off work.

“Expanding the availability of after hours services is giving patients choices.

“We are pleased that the health minister has re-confirmed that supporting GPs in providing after hours medical care is an important part of government policy.

“The AMA will continue to support government initiatives in this area and we will work with government to ensure scarce health dollars are directed where they are most needed.”
