AMA: GP training places - just what the doctor ordered

AMA President, Dr Rosanna Capolingua, today warmly welcomed funding of an extra 75 training places for general practitioners announced today by the Federal Government.

"The funding commitment for 75 first year places in 2009 and an extra 100 places in 2010 will help boost GP numbers," she said.

"This is just what the doctor ordered - a much needed show of support for general practice and our patients which will have an immediate impact. Doctors in the GP training program start delivering services and looking after patients straight away.

"It also demonstrates the government's commitment to health during uncertain economic times - Minister Roxon is to be commended for keeping investment in health high on the agenda," Dr Capolingua said.

The AMA has consistently highlighted the urgent need to expand the number of GP training places, and recently called on the government to fund an extra 100 places each year for the next five years.

"The best answer to the GP shortage is to train more GPs - and that is precisely what the government is now doing."
