Threats to population health will be the focus of this one-day Summit on global climate change, to be held in Melbourne on Thursday 14 November.

In an Australian first, scientists and epidemiologists will discuss the serious population health risks associated with climate change.

"Scientists agree that global climate change will have a major, unprecedented impact on human health," said Dr Kerryn Phelps, AMA President.

"Recent research from Climate Action Network Australia suggests that among many health risks, an increase in mosquito, food and water borne diseases will result from climate change, leading to an increase in premature death and illness in many cases.

"Climate change is a reality. The associated health risks demand a strategic coordinated response.

"The AMA calls on the Federal Government to act now to reduce the impact of climate change on population health by

re examining its position on international environmental protocols

increasing funding for research into health issues related to climate change

increasing investment in future public health strategies

Australian Conservation Foundation executive director, Don Henry has welcomed the AMA's involvement in tackling climate change.

"Australia's leading health lobby is telling us that climate change is a major health issue, and that urgent action is needed. There are now compelling environmental health and economic reasons for the immediate ratification of the Kyoto Protocol," he said.

The Summit is one of the AMA's major public health committee projects for 2002.
