AMA encourages more Australians to consider organ donation

AMA President, Dr Bill Glasson, today calls on all Australians to consider the gift of donating healthy organs by discussing their wishes with family members well in advance of a tragic event.

Dr Glasson said Australia has one of the lowest rates of organ donation in the world, but one of the highest success rates of transplanting available donated organs.

"For many people, available organs offer the hope of a quality, healthy life and prevent endless hours of suffering and ill health," Dr Glasson said.

"The critical shortage of transplant organs sees many people die while on waiting lists.

"While 90 per cent of Australians support the principle of organ donation, in 2002 Australia's organ donation rate was only 206 donors (10.6 donors per million population).

"In that year the waiting period for kidneys was almost four years. While 965 transplants were performed in 2002, 1,788 patients were still on the waiting list and 107 patients died.

"I encourage family members to respect the wishes of loved ones who have made the decision to donate their organs.

"While family members will be asked to make the decision in the event of a crisis, it can be easier to discuss the possibility and make arrangements well in advance.

"Making this decision when a family member dies is a tough call and very difficult to consider at such an emotional time.

"In 1999 in NSW 82 per cent of families refused to give consent to donate their family member's organs when approached, following a crisis.

"People who are interested in donating their organs can talk to their GP or contact the Health Insurance Commission for more information.

"One donation can save many lives.

"David Hookes' family made the very difficult decision to offer others the gift of life following this tragic event," Dr Glasson said.
