AMA Awards 2007 President's Award

AMA President Dr Mukesh Haikerwal last night announced the 2007 AMA President's Award had been bestowed posthumously on Dr Don Sheldon.

The President's Award is given to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution towards fostering the objectives of the AMA in pursuit of a better health system for Australia.

"Sadly, Dr Sheldon passed away in March," Dr Haikerwal said.

"But I was able to visit him in hospital before he passed away, and inform him he had received the award.

"He was very pleased and grateful for the recognition - Don was proud of his work with the AMA."

Dr Haikerwal announced the award during a gala dinner in Melbourne, at the AMA's National Conference.

During his long and distinguished surgical career, Dr Sheldon worked in England, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, and metropolitan and regional Australia.

"Dr Sheldon dedicated a lot of time and energy to professional and Government organisations, and made teaching and research a priority," Dr Haikerwal said.

"He made a major contribution to the nation by advancing medical know-how and fostering young medical minds."

Dr Sheldon's son Lachlan Sheldon accepted the award on his father's behalf.
