AMA Awards 2007 Gold Medal

AMA President, Dr Mukesh Haikerwal, last night bestowed the organisation's highest honour on a Victorian general practitioner with a history of bringing communities together.

The AMA Gold Medal winner for 2007 is Victorian GP, Dr George Santoro.

This prestigious accolade goes to a member of the profession who has rendered outstanding services to the AMA, to the practice of medicine, or to the community.

"Dr Santoro has done a lot of good work in fostering close ties with a range of ethnic communities, encouraging doctors from diverse backgrounds to become involved in the AMA," Dr Haikerwal said.

"He's also poured his energy into engaging communities in rural and regional areas, and to raising the profile of medicine in the regional media."

Dr Haikerwal handed Dr Santoro his award at a gala dinner in Melbourne last night, at the AMA's National Conference.
