AMA 16th National Conference 2004 - AMA Youth Health Award

A group of indigenous young people from Geelong's Wathaurong Aboriginal Community has taken out the AMA's Youth Health Award for their book on racism and Indigenous health.

The award, presented by AMA President Dr Bill Glasson, recognises the contribution young people make to the health of their peers and stems from the AMA Youth Health Advocate Program.

Award winners Joleen Ryan, Julia Torpey, Megan Torpey, Tegan Watson and coordinator, Victorian GP, Dr Leanne Rowe, produced 'URGENT', a book for non-Aboriginal students to hear first hand how racism impacts on the health of Indigenous young people.

Dr Glasson said the stories are skilfully written and at times bring a spine-chilling reality to the impact of non-Aboriginal culture in Australia.
