AMA 15th National Conference 2003 - AMA Woman in Medicine Award 2003

AMA President, Dr Kerryn Phelps, tonight presented the AMA Woman in Medicine Award 2003 to Sydney general practitioner, Dr Elizabeth Jane.

The Woman in Medicine Award is presented to a woman who has made a major contribution to the medical profession.

"Dr Jane has dedicated her 50 year career to the development of education and training of Australian general practitioners at a local and national level," Dr Phelps said.

"Her experience and commitment has resulted in an invaluable contribution to the development, maintenance and improvement of standards for general practice.

"Through her work as a member of the Doctor's Health Advisory Service, Dr Jane is very aware of the pressures facing women in general practice.

"In her central role in training in the RACGP, she has dealt with the increase in applications from women at all levels of general practice training.

"She has been a strong advocate for the special needs facing women in general practice.

"Her participation on workforce committees includes the Australian Medical Workforce Advisory Committee, she said.

Awards for her work are numerous, including Member of the Order of Australia in 1999 for her contribution to medicine. Dr Jane is an AMA Fellow.

Dr Jane has been a principal in general practices in northern Sydney where she successfully combined work and family life, raising three children, a feat she describes as difficult but very satisfying.
