Timetable of legislative changes

In the February issue of the Workplace Relations News, we discussed the upcoming “Right to disconnect” legislation which will be in place by August 2024.

It is a good opportunity to note other up and coming legislation that will be introduced during the course of the year and into 2025 such as:

  • changes to the Work Health and Safety Act
  • new defintions of employer/employee
  • changes to casual employment
  • right to disconnect
  • independent contractor definition
  • new rules to criminalise underpayment of wages.

The Workplace Relations Team will keep you updated on all new legislation during the course of the year and how it may impact your practice and its employees.

2024 legislation changes

  • Superannuation - rate change from the 1st of July to 11.5%
  • Award Wage – increase from 1 July
  • Unpaid Parental Leave - From July the Fair Work Act allows employees to take unpaid leave when they have a new child. Previously, employees could take up to 30 days’ leave in the first year. From July, 100 days’ leave can be taken in the two years after a new child arrives. Both parents can take up to a whole year off whenever they want in the first two years. Both parents will be able to apply for an extra 12 months after the first year.
