Workplace Relations

Policies and procedures

Why have policies and procedures? Together, they guide your practice and reduce the risk of liability. They are also a must when promoting consistency across the practice.

From an employee's perspective, it will provide them with a well-rounded view of the workplace, allowing them to understand the culture, accepted behaviours and how they can achieve them. From an employer's perspective, they assist with managing staff effectively and consistently by outlining what is acceptable and unacceptable in the workplace.

What is a policy vs a procedure?

A policy is a predetermined course of action. They identify key activities and provide guidance to the management team on how to handle issues as they arise.
A procedure explains the action plan for carrying out a policy. In other words, it is the various steps you need to take to carry it out.

Policies and procedures will go a long way towards protecting your practice by complying with Fair Work Legislation, National Employment Standards and Modern Awards. Without them, your practice will be operating at a higher level of risk than recommended.

The Workplace Relations Templated Policies and Procedures are found in our WR Handbooks which can be purchased via the AMA Queensland website.
