Trial periods under HPSS Award

Under the Health Profession and Support Services Award (HPSS) an employer may employ a person for a trial period to determine their capacity because of the effects of a disability to do the job.

There are certain conditions under the award which apply:

  • The trial period must not exceed 12 weeks, except in some cases where additional work adjustment time (not exceeding 4 weeks) may be required.
  • The minimum amount payable to the employee during the trial period must not be less than $102 per week.
  • Induction or training as appropriate to the job being trialed must be included during this period. This also includes PPE.

Where the employer and employee wish to establish a continuing employment relationship following the completion of the trial period, a further contract of employment must be entered into based upon the outcome of the assessment of capacity to fulfil the said role.
