Help teach the next generation of GPs
The University of Queensland is on the look out for GPs who want to provide clinical placements for students in their practice.
From 2024, UQ is including experience in general practice in almost every year of the new medical program. This provides a tremendous opportunity for students, early in their training, to have a high-quality learning experience and see the opportunities available to them in general practice.
Teaching attracts CPD, allowing GPs to meet more than half their yearly CPD requirements.
RACGP: for GPs supervising medical students, the RACGP will recognise a maximum of 30 hours CPD out of the required 50 hours each year, allocated across both:
- educational activities (up to 15 hours per GP teacher per year) and
- performance review (up to 15 hours per GP teacher per year)
ACRRM: similarly, ACRRM recognises teaching work so that this can be recorded under educational activities and performance review.
Providing clinical placements for students in your practice enables GP teachers to build teaching skills, obtain a UQ academic title and gain access to the extensive UQ library collection. Clinical placements also attract the teaching PIP payment for each student per session.
UQ medical student teaching opportunities include:
- Year 2 medical students: longitudinal placement in general practice of one day per week over 14 weeks. This is a fabulous way to dip your toes into teaching - try it out! This is also our area of greatest need for new GP teachers.
- Year 3 or 4 medical students: general practice immersion experience of 5-8 half-days per week over 7-8 weeks
