Committee of Doctors in Training August update

Dr Rob Nayer, Chair, Committee of Doctors in Training

Thanks to everyone who put up posters, spread the word, shared social media tiles and more to help us promote the 2022 Resident Hospital Health Check survey. The survey has now closed and the data is currently with the statistician in order for AMA Queensland staff to create the report.

By late September, we will do a media blitz all around Queensland to expose the success or failure of your hospital. You’ll also be able to use the data to guide your future placement decisions. We had great feedback on our survey hospital visits that many of you had used previous reports to choose your placements for this year.

Elsewhere on the advocacy front, we continue to push the Minister for Health to set a date for the promised Mental Health and Wellbeing summit. We know that doctors in training are struggling in the workplace and continue to remind Queensland health that they need to do more to address the fatigue and burnout epidemic across the health sector. Much has been written about the culture of medicine, and the mental health struggles within ranks. We know that doctors cannot provide high quality patient care when they’re fatigued, burnt out, or otherwise struggling. Action is needed to make sure Queenslanders can continue to be confident the doctor who’s treating them in our public hospitals is providing the high-quality care they deserve.

In events news, Deputy Co-Chair Dr Natasha Abeysekera has been hard at work locking in speakers for the Junior Doctor Conference Gold Coast in October. This event features a doctor in training curated program that aims to re-inspire you about how to get the most out of your medical degree. There will also be a poster competition, so if you’re looking for a chance to present your research now is the time to submit your work for consideration! Our team is really looking forward to meeting and speaking with you at the conference, which should be a lot of fun. Make sure you register now – refunds are available if you end up being rostered on for that weekend.
