What is a natural disaster in business ?

Are you prepared for when this happens ?

A natural disaster describes an event outside of human control or activity such as a flood or bush fire…and who can forget Covid 19.

If a natural disaster or other serious event happens, the health, safety and security of the team should be the main concern of all employers.

Do you have emergency plans in place to keep yourself and your team safe in the event of such a disaster ? Do you have plans in place to ensure you maintain contact with your employees in the event that they are unable to attend the workplace for a period of time during or after a disastrous event ?

It is really important that you provide your current contact details to your employer so that they can contact you and maintain this contact during any such event. Likewise it is also really important that employers keep communicating with their staff regarding timelines for returning to work. Email, texts and social media can be valuable tools for checking in and keeping in touch with each other during this period.

Employers and Employees should remember to keep in regular contact and deal with each other in good faith.

If you cannot report to your workplace during or after a natural disaster, eg it may be closed or you are unable to work, then you must refer to your employment agreement and policies and the specific circumstances to determine leave and pay.
