Changes to the governance structure welcomed

AMA Tasmania welcomes the Tasmanian government's announcement today of changes to the governance structure of the Tasmanian health systems based on the interim recommendations of the Child Safe Governance Review that will see the appointment of a dedicated CE (chief executives) for the north and northwest hospitals.

AMA Tasmania has advocated strongly for these systemic changes to the governance structure. We have long held the view that having one CE across three hospitals was not providing the necessary leadership required to ensure each region's nuances are reflected in the overarching management and the day-to-day operations.

Considering our hospitals are dealing with workforce crises, including staff shortages, high staff turnover, low morale and burnout, this new leadership model is welcomed as it better supports staff on the front line who want to be able to work and connect with their chief executive which to date has been impossible to achieve with one person spread across three hospital sites and two regions.

This more robust governance structure is a positive change that has come out of tragic circumstances at the Launceston General Hospital; another critical step in ensuring suitable systems are in place to provide the best protection and support for staff and patients in what should be a safe and healing environment.>>>>ENDS
