The AMA and RACGP have called for the Federal Health Minister to postpone the introduction of the 30/20 rule due begin on 1 October 2022.

The AMA and RACGP have sent a joint letter to the Health Minister urging the Minister to postpone the introduction of the 30/20 rule, citing that the COVID-19 Pandemic is still ongoing with further waves of infections expected later this year. Telephone consults remain an essential service with many vulnerable patients still unable or unwilling to use videoconferencing software.

The introduction of the 30/20 rule would result in any GP providing more than 30 daily telephone consultations on 20 or more days over a 12-month period being referred to the Professional Services Review (PSR). Throughout the pandemic GPs have had to balance the need to provide care for their patients with protecting themselves from infection, telephone consults have been essential to ensuring GPs can strike this balance.

The AMA and RACGP previously collaborated in calling for the reinstatement of COVID-19 telehealth items in July.
