New GP training regions and governance arrangements announced

Federal Minister for Health, Sussan Ley, has announced 11 new training regions and governance arrangements for the future delivery of GP training, commencing in 2016.

A new profession-led General Practice Training Advisory Committee, to be jointly managed by the two GP Colleges, has also been established. It will provide advice to Government on GP training policy and delivery; and will conduct an evaluation of the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) programme.

According to the Minister’s media release, a tender process for the delivery of the AGPT programme from 2016 will be conducted shortly, to ensure new regional training organisations and arrangements are in place for the 2016 intake of GP registrars.

Further information, including a map providing details of the new training regions, is available on the Australian General Practice Training website.
