Fees List Update for 1 July and 1 August MBS Changes
Members are advised that the AMA Fees List is now updated to reflect changes to the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) that came into effect in July and August 2020.
AMA and Craft group advocacy - cardiac diagnostic services
Members may be aware that there is significant concern amongst many general practitioners and diagnostic imaging specialists regarding the MBS cardiac diagnostic service changes. The AMA and relevant medical craft groups are continuing to engage with Government to raise these concerns. The AMA will advise members accordingly of any progress on this advocacy work.
AMA Fees List - September update
The following changes came into effect on the AMA Fees List from 10 September 2020:
- Significant changes to Cardiac diagnostic services – reflecting 1 August MBS changes
- Minor changes to ovarian cancer, pathology and botox injections items - reflecting 1 August MBS changes
- Computed tomography, MRI and Pathology services (including two new genetic items) – reflecting 1 July MBS changes.

MBS changes NOT reflected in the AMA Fees List
The AMA Fees List will not be reflecting changes to the temporary Covid-19, mental health and telehealth MBS items that occurred on 1 July 2020 due to the items being one or more of the following:
- temporary items;
- can be billed under existing items; or
- can only be claimed if the service is bulk billed.
With any changes to MBS items, either resulting from the MBS Reviews or otherwise, the AMA reminds members to ensure they review all MBS item descriptors and claiming rules in the explanatory notes to ensure they meet the MBS claiming requirements and avoid compliance issues.
