RANZCP Assessment Results

E-dit has previously reported on concerns raised by trainees from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) about the very low pass rates for the first two cohorts of trainees sitting exams under the competency based training program introduced in 2012. Following representations by the AMA, the College reports that it has taken a number of steps including suspending the ‘show cause’ requirement for trainees who have been unsuccessful in an assessment after three attempts. This does not apply to trainees who have been unsuccessful in three 2012 rotation assessments or who have exceed the time permitted to be ‘not in training’.

The Australian Medical Council (AMC) has also advised the AMA that it is investigating RANZCP pass rates, saying that concerns expressed by the AMA and trainees have elements of a systemic complaint that will reviewed according to its policy - ‘Complaints about programs of study, education providers and organisations accredited by the Australian Medical Council’.
